What day is Memorial Day?
This day is celebrated every year on the month of May in remembrance of the people who lost their lives while serving the military. It marks its start between summer and winter season. There is a tradition to host the American flag at half-mast. People on this day attend picnics, visit national cemeteries, BBQ’s and some even spend time with family.
This day actually originated after the American civil war to honor the union and the Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the war. This day is popularly known as Decoration Day. This day is declared as a holiday on the last Monday of the month. The non-government offices, schools, and even local business firms remain closed as well.
There are total 25 places named in connection with the origin of the Memorial Day. The wearing of poppies is also done in this day. The poppies mean a loss of life as well as recovery and new life in respect of those servicemen who were physically damaged in this war.
Memorial Day this year is going to be celebrated on May 28th 2018. The observances are held at the military graveyard, memorials, military-themed parades, and cemeteries. This day is also associated with the Indianapolis 500 car race which takes place on Sunday, a day before the Memorial Day. The other traditions followed on this day are raising the U.S flags at the flag poles, then is lowered at half-mast and again is raised up to full at noon. The lowering of the flag at half-mast is for the soldiers who died for their country over the years whereas, re-raising the flag means to resolve the living to carry on the fight for freedom so that the heroes of the nation do not die in vain. The Memorial Day concert is held on the United States Capitol building west lawn and is broadcasted live all across the country.
